ah, I just found out that it is another one of those "people's vote" things, which I can't stand. so it is practically meaningless. SJers sure love to vote for things to overcome our lack of self confidence!! Is that what it is? Haligonians don't bother to vote, because they think they are Toronto and thus win by default. "We don't need to vote."

PS I think we have a nice little arts and culture scene here

Brufrog- I thought that same damn thing!! I even went äre you kidding me!!?"when I heard it on the news. Not çause I think that anywhere in paticualar should win, just that my god, Saint John would not even be on a list of Canada's top 10 in my opinion. It's funny how we had just been going on about the stupifdpeople's votes popularity contest shit yesterday.
Evolve won best Festival in Canada that way as well... (although I had a blast there, I don't agree)

Oh well, maybe that will propel more arts and culture in Saint John.

Rest of thread- HA!

I think I'll create the Largest Penis competition contest website and then start barraging all my virtual friends asking them to vote for me. If I win, will I have a large penis?

I think so.

OK, apparently I was misinformed. It wasn't fan voting. It was citizens sending in nominations with an explanation as to why our town/city should be Cultureville. Then I guess someone or some folks at CBC judged it based on submissions, or something. So I guess SJers are very convincing, whereas Haligonians suck, as they didn't make the top 10.

Yes I saw that. I'm very curious what it means that North End Halifax is in the list but Halifax isn't.

How about some love for the real issue here then? Saint John deserves this accolade. A lot of folks work very hard to do a lotta shit: some cool shit, some stupid shit, some real shit and some lame-assed same old fake shit all around town, but that's the score. Folks are working hard on their shit and the shit is always going down.

And that's some bad ass shit in the Port City.

The assumption that we would never deserve that just shows how much or how little one is paying attention, regardless of the selection process. Sorry to say so!

[And I do know you're someone who knows Craig. ;)]

your argument stinks!! ;)

I'm not sure if we deserve it or not - I do think that, per capita, we might well be the most culturally rich town/city in Atlantic Canada - all I know is that this is not the way to hand out accolades.

Perhaps, but all I know is there are two conversations that are the most boring, pedantic things I can possibly think of:

1) Saint John sucks, etc.

2) How can Saint John get better, etc.

Polling particularities and hullabaloo aside, doing is the new thing and I think Saint John has become a doers' town. Those conversations are all kindsa yesterday's papers right there.

No one said SJ sucks.
I did however say that the arts and Culture scene should not even be in the top 10 and I stand by that. Doesn't mean it hasn't gotten better and that there isn't one. It just simply isn't the most cultured that's for sure. You realize this the more you travel and live elsewhere. I have always been one to stick up for my home town, but I also have learned over the years and am way more realistic. I also have been part of many art endevors in multiple provinces, so it's not like I have ever been just sitting back complaining.

i disagree! the tone here is one that tacitly and inaccurately imposes an habitual suckiness, which is both passe and dullsville in my books, and i'll stand by that. ;)

Saint John needs its own elaborate monster hoax like Bigfoot or Carrot Top. Some possibilities include:

-The Marsh Creek Monster. A fish that got irradiated from swimming in poop
-Gasquatch. A hairy beast that lurks in the shadows of oil refineries
-The Saint John Kill Rats
-Skeletontario. A skeleton that haunted NB until it moved to Toronto

Fake photos, grainy videos, the works. It will be AWESOME

I think I formed a very realistic opinion.

Also, I saw the gassquatch the other day, I could have sworn. I took a picture but it turned out blurry....

i think you share a very commonplace opinion, but i do genuinely think it is not a realistic perception of what's happening in the city right now. not saying that to point at you in particular (or anyone), as it is a commonplace and unsurprising thing to hear, but i think it is something that lingers from days gone by more than it being any reflection of the current playing field.

Quote:
"Artistic organizations have reached a great maturity now in that the product that they're putting out is second to none. So when you look at what Saint John has to offer, I think, it's quite amazing,” she said.

Hrabluk points to the Saint John Theatre Company, the Arts Centre, and that Saint John has the most commercial galleries of any other city in the Maritimes, as indications support is strong.

Good enough for me.

I'd trade all the white-walled galleries of West Queen West Toronto for one that interests me as much as Sarah Jones' place. And Britt's, as one example among several in SJ, matches pound-for-pound the best local gastro-pubs in the coolest neighbourhoods in the big smoke.

I think SJ, at least uptown, is a pretty neat place right now, as far as consuming cool homegrown shit goes. It's most likely crummy's doers doing that distinguishes this wave of optimism from past groundswells. A Cultural Capital needs cultural capital, which SJ has in abundance at the moment it seems.

HOW DO YOU FEEL NOW THAT YOU'VE BEEN FAVORABLY COMPARED TO TORONTO? You should be honored, damn it.

I am refering my statement to the fact that they won the most cultured in Canada. Not as a whole, I know the city is not in that same old mind frame, but seriously.
I guess we will agree to disagree! : )

I'd be happier if you spelled favourably correctly.

No, seriously, I like hearing that assessment from you. It's very positive. I do love what has happened in SJ since I moved to the area 13 years ago. It is not the same place as then, really. Thankfully. Just from a wine, beer and food standpoint (my area of work) it is a completely new city. Still, we have a ways to go.

Music wise, we have a neat little scene, and lots of great local talent, but they need better support from more than just insiders. Halifax has that, I think.

I do think our art scene is way better than the other NB cities (not Hali I don't think), but if you said that to the arties in Freddy and Monkeytown they'd probably laugh in your face!

And we are way far up on the others wrt live theatre, with SJTC and the nicest theatre in Atlantic Canada, the Imperial. Halifax ain't got nothing on us there.

BTW Meg, we were only voted Cultureville of the Maritimes, not Canada. We now have to compete against the other provinces' winners.

As far as cultural growth is concerned, I am proud of SJ and I think we're doing just great in that respect. Generally pretty lousy music scene aside, I agree with Craig.

"Quantitative" culture, on the other hand... I dunno. I still think we're just about the least interesting non-Moncton city I've visited, but we're tryin'. That counts for something.

Everyone's idea of culture is different, I suppose. What do you all think are your top 5 cultural highlights of SJ (including greater SJ since that is where I live)? They'd probably all be different from mine. Or maybe not.

I agree in part with Mr. Maple's assessment.

Anywho, to answer brufrog:

1. I am of the opinion that SJTC has more to offer every year. I always enjoy their productions
2. Third Space are bringing in a lot of great American and Canadian artists. I'm very surprised at the sometimes low turnout at their events. It's getting better though, I think.
3. The Saint John Multicultral & Newcomers Resource Center always has happenings with other groups like Hola!, Chinese Cultural Association etc.
4. Saint John Free School. Awesome concept!
5. I think our music scene is something to be lauded. A lot of other places I've visited would kill for a scene like ours (Victoria, for instance). Just because there's always room for improvement doesn't mean we shouldn't value our community spirit. Concentrated effort goes a long way. Just look at the cooperation & turnout for 5 Seconds of Decision.

I don't live in the 'burbs, but I'm sure those areas have stuff to offer as well.

My top 5 SJ cultural loves, off the top of my head (could change if I really thought about it). These are rather general

1) Food & Drink: drastically improving restaurant and bar scene, in terms of food choices as well as beer and wine
2) Nature: ability to live and play by the water for not too much $ and enjoy campfires, kayaking, swimming, sitting at a pub/resto with a water view, Rockwood Park, Irving Nature Park, etc.
3) Music: the tight music scene with its interconnecting players (perhaps too tight)
4) Theatre: the Imperial Theatre and SJTC
5) Art!: all the commercial art galleries and the increasing amount of public art

I am not an idiot. When I was here, going to EVERY SINGLE SHOW, I thought the same. I know it sounds cliche that I am away and talking about how the art and culture here is/was lame. I thought that all my life though. Really. It has potential, sure, I'm not kidding myself though.
You taking a shot at Cougars is ridiculous. Open mics are in every city and will always be a part of music scenes. I know some of ya'll don't even really go to shows, or open mics! and sit on here and complain.
I go to Seadogs games, Peppers with their loud ass dishwasher, Britts, Bigtide, art galleries etc.... Because I make a thread about people getting together to jam at cougars, OMG!.

yeah, just sayin'
What I'm just sayin' is that you don't know some real things that matter in a "scene". Going to ONE bar for the odd show, is not doing a thing.

I also can't help but wonder what's wrong with going to cougars...

I see culture and diversity there on sundays and tuesdays
for the two open mic nights a week they host.

kinda not sure what the dig is for. if you just don't like the place, i hardly see it as a reason someone else shouldn't.

can you please include why just to clarify?
