What has happened to this place? It used to be informative and entertaining.

Now nothing ever happens.

Social media happened. Also, people aged, moved away, and generally changed their habits and priorities. But mainly I think it's social media (facebook and twitter) -- exacerbated, perhaps, by the fact that this forum made no attempt to integrate itself with the broader social media architecture. Too late to fix now.

'Social Media' blows. I don't have facebook..... have no idea what the point of twitter is (well, it seems the point is to completely ruin the english language and lower IQ's in a very public fashion), yet I will admit to thoroughly enjoying Pinterest. I think because there's no talking.

Anyway, GC used to be wicked fun.

I am often engrossed in facebook and twitter, discussing music and news, sharing content and opinions with friends, and learning about local events and various goings-on. It's a lot like what I used to spend most of my time doing on GC, only better. And the lack of anonymity on facebook means things are quite a bit more civil.

Not mobile friendly. I only sit down on the laptop once or twice a day. The rest of the time I'm mobile.

I think the bigger question is what ever happened to the point of Giraffecycle? A site about local bands, advertising local shows and community of local show-goers to talk, network, ect.

I don't see many GC'ers replying to posts on if they go to shows still or not, or what they'd like to see. Kinda sad really, there is still a scene out there (small but there) that a lot of folks are missing out on :-(

Great feedback, thanks!

I have blog contributors waiting in the wings and social media plans in the works. We have had ongoing technical issues for months that Eddie is working on in his spare time and we are quite grateful for that. Most notably, the wordpress does not load half the time preventing me from posting even the meagre amount of content we have now.

I won't necessarily abdicate closing the forum, if even just for archival purposes, but I don't feel it will serve much other purpose in the future. Things will be looking and feeling a lot differently soon enough.

Unfortunately, the site fell way behind the times for a bunch of reasons, timing and scheduling being one.

There's a website?

But really, I've been on GC since waaaaay back when... I think the first time I got banned with the ol' Marx Marvelous monicker would have been.....oh.....I don't even remember..... when did this thing start? I'm thinking 2002 or 2003 or maybe even earlier? I dunno...I think I was in grad school then....

Anyway, during all this time, I think I went on the actual website like, 10 times.... I just bookmarked the forum and never looked back.

I might be wrong, but that's just how I used the site. Why not ditch the site and just keep the forum, but add more sections? Like a shows/events section, an editorial/rant section, music discussion and maybe a "this is where the fun is" section.

Because the technology is outdated, not mobile friendly, not very shareable. It makes no sense at all.

I'm one of those, I have 3 kids actually and still both make it to shows and put shows on. Now my kids are starting to go to shows (1 of them so far). Just sad to see it lose what it was intended for.

Yeah, this. If the forum currently doesn't have enough posts to support one forum, adding more sections would probably make it look even deader than it already does.

First, by outdated, I assume you really mean 'vintage'.

Second, with respect to being not mobile friendly, people should pay attention to the real world when out and about, not waste time dicking around on their phones.

And sharing is for M&M's, not random forum awesomeness.

Our whole civilization is going to shit. GC is a vestige of hope in this ridiculous 'Made In China' world....

Dammit. I am a sad old man.

As an aside, when you google 'Sad old man' you end up with lots of pictures of Gary Oldman.

WHAT THE WHAT?

Maybe it will come back like other "vintage" things have. People can have a messageboard day annually or something. Someone can print out the comedy gold threads and make a coffee table book. All of us who were here since the beginning and the long haul, can sport Giraffecycle t-shirts and tell our children of that times we had, the laughs, the bannings, the msusical pretentions. You'll then find the t-shirts in Frenchy's bins and then be resold on ebay. LONG LIVE GC

Times change. People change. Look at the Locals forum. The Moncton one doesn't even exist anymore.

Sometimes I stop by this board for a trip down memory lane.....I spent a lot of time here a few years ago.

This forum stood no chance against the second wave, non-disingenuous level of apathy that hit every regular contributor like a truck.

I could have sworn this was a Hold Steady lyric. I even hear it as Craig Finn's voice in my head.
