We have had a large number of people with copied cards and funds stolen from Fredericton today. Not confirmed, but it seems like the common place is the Lincoln big stop.

I'd suggest everyone check their accts just in case

I'm surprised you are sharing this. RBC will not tell me the places my card has been copied, only that it's been copied.

(this has happened to me 3 times)

Bit of a liability issue until proven, no?

I am not telling you that. Like I said, not confirmed.

A friend just called me and told me that he had several hundred bucks cleaned out, and his friend lost $4500.

How do debit cards get "copied" and used without the PIN?

who is to say they didn't have a camera recording the pin?

edit: aah. i see you said do.

They have a device go overtop the card swiper/card slot of a debit machine that records the debit card's information, then they have a camera that points to the keypad. then they wait.

So the store has to be in on an operation like this?

not exactly, the card readers are designed so you can't tell there is a card reader on it. they're a custom fit to a particular model.

But I would think that usually an employee of the business would be in on it, because that's usually how the copying device gets attached to the terminal.

Yea, my friend is one of the intern photogs for the military, her and a bunch of the military people went there for lunch that day and they all got wiped out.

Does the bank, or whoever, replace the stolen money once they figure everything out?

Another scam that people will do is switch out a debit pin pad with a device that looks exactly like a debit pin pad, however it reads the information stored in the card, the card number, pin and account information.

These devices can store hundreds of accounts.

Later on, the theif will come back and switch out that pin pad for another.

They're usually disguised as technicians, or they may just work as a team. One person will keep the cashier busy while the other will do the switch.

I went to the bank on Saturday and got a new card. She asked me what I had heard. Then she told me that the RCMP had been to several branches in Fredericton about a month ago.

She said that basically a shit load of people have been affected. The banks are on the hook to replace the cash, however some will get their money back more quickly than others.

Friend of mine got $200 bucks taken out of his account after using the ATM at Jack's Pizza.

Drunken pizza eaters, beware!
