While on my break I saw the following between Thandi's and Canterbury Lounge:

4 Police cars including one watch commander.

1 Police van.

2 provincial vehicles including the coroner’s SUV.

1 News truck with crew.

I saw the police there this morning before I came in too Matt and my friend from the TJ was out there at lunch. I talked to her but she didn't say what was going on.

I just heard that someone was found dead in one the office suites in that area. I don't have a name yet though. It was either the building where Adam&Co. have their practice space or the one next to it, because the police were guarding a door to prevent anyone's entry. I didn't notice exactly which door though because I wanted to act all "cool" like I didn't notice there was something really big happening.

Update: The police are guarding the door to Adam&Co's rehearsal spot.

edit to add: It may be worth noting that I'm fairly certain the picture shows the body being removed from 52 Canterbury, not 32.

The CBC just said it was Richard Oland, which makes sense since he had an office in that building.

Was he the gentleman that owned the Green BMW 750li? If so I've seen him before, seemed like a very nice man. My condolences to anyone that knew him.

Wow...what's with the suspicious death comment from the police? That's Derek's brother, by all accounts a good man.

Does that mean murder/burglary, or could it even imply suicide?

by today's walkabout i concede to two theories.

1) They have ruled out natural or cause by suicide and have begun emptying every trash can into the back of a city works truck and comb through it by an officer.

2) Ivan Court has introduced a new cost saving option of having city works and police draw straws within each department on friday afternoons, and the shortest straw goes collecting bottles and cans.

there's an awful lot of police activity on the corner of germain and princess right now, as well as on grannan street by the old sunstar. there's twenty cops easy, removing screens from windows n such.

it's starting to look rather sinister.

There's no way they'd go to that extent for anyone else, which is a bit I dunno what. Screens off windows?

And I already suspect Drumwaiter. He knew that vehicle WAY to well.

It has nothing to do with who it was, if there was fowl play/murder they gotta go with ANY little lead they may have, for anyone.

I was just jokingly reacting to the "money buys a better investigation" thing. In all truth, I really don't believe the cops would go to the same extent for you or me as they would for an Oland, Irving, or Hawk. Leads are one thing, but a big ass canvasing like that (taking screens off windows type thing) just seems like a lot, even for a murder, provided there's no smoking gun pointing to the window screens, you know? If there is a reason, then obviously, by all means go on anything. Dumping all the garbage cans, checking cars, all that is totally understandable.

Question: I am no expert on what happens after a murder, but if someone is rich, notable, whatever, is it just "well, ________ died, we better rip the shit outta this neighborhood", or does the family throw money at the authorities to make the teeth on the comb that much finer?

Subquestion: Can you actually pay authorities to do a more thorough investigation, or is there some clause or law that forbids such a thing? I can see paying PIs, Magnum PIs even, but the actual real police cops seems a little... I dunno. I should have the same investigation done after my murder as anyone else in the city. Maybe that's just me.

I think any murder investigation in this city would get the full resources available/needed to solve the crime. There aren't that many murders around here. However, when the murdered is a wealthy guy killed in his office without witnesses -- I think there's a much higher likelihood that some kind of professional/organized crime is possibly in play. That sort of thing generally takes more investigation and more time, I would think. With most murders in Saint John, I suspect there is quite often a witness or something obvious--domestic situation, bloody unhinged guy trying to be hidden by his buddies, etc. Totally guessing out of my ass here, I know nothing about this case beyond what local media is reporting.

Also, the screens off of windows in the Germain Street area--the local paper said today there was a robbery there that the police say was unrelated to the murder investigation.

People may hire their own investigators privately, and then share the information found with the police, but no one can privately purchase police investigation time.

this question was a joke right? do you honestly believe that the police department would only do a thorough job if they were paid extra?

police forces don't want unsolved murders...they want to find the killer, get the evidence to prove their guilt and solve the case.
a high rate of unsolved murders doesn't look good on a police chief...
so yes, even your murder would be investigated as thoroughly as a rich persons.

Half and half joke/not joke. But, to put what I'm asking into a better form, why wasn't Iceberg Mark's death given anything more than a passing glance, and an Oland gets Q-tips the length of Canterbury? I wasn't saying that they would only do a thorough job if paid, just that "thorough" might get a heftier haul if money is involved.

Shoot the Band actually answered my question perfectly: nobody can purchase police investigation time. That was pretty much what I was asking. I think he makes a good point on the low number of murdiddlyurders in the city, therefore investigations can be a bit more in depth.

I had no clue about the break in up there. Did that get any mention on CBC radio? I listen to that all day driving, must've missed it. I've been trying to somewhat follow this.

who was iceberg Mike? what were the circumstances of his death?
This appears to be a possible homicide...was Iceberg Mike murdered? If so, was someone arrested/charged?
Maybe the got leads int the case early, figured out the suspects...the Oland death, maybe the evidence hasn't been there to figure out what happened/who did it right away.

so, were any of you around at 2am to see whether or not major crime did a thorough investigation? Or is it assumed that because no one has been charged that they didn't do it?
Could it be there wasn't evidence to link someone to the murder? Real life isn't like CSI...they don't always find DNA, fibres, etc...

Good thing we are getting more prisons for the increase of unreported crime.

On topic, I heard from two completely different unrelated and unreliable sources that a gun was used.

/fueling gossip since the '80s.

I heard the same thing from a very reliable source. As well as other more gruesome details that I reluctant to post. Freaky stuff. It's hard to imagine who would have wanted to kill such a nice guy who'd done so much for Saint John over the years.

Sounds like a hit. Axes would be harder to find and trace. Could be a crime of passion, who knows. Most crimes in this region are drug-related.

He did some kind of investment business in that building, and was a competitive sailor. It would be weird if it was the latter that got him killed, but who knows.

My guess is he either took someone's significant other, or their money. Neither has to be a terrible thing, and all I mean is affairs aren't exactly uncommon among the very rich rich, and some investments don't work. I'm not saying he's a thief, just that maybe someone's idea of a return didn't pan out.

The drug thing/organized crime is certainly a very easy connection to make, and hell, could be the case. I'd like to think most of the bigger names around town are on the up and up and only rip us off with products, leaving the dirty work to whoever else. The reality is that organized crime is definitely alive and well in Saint John. Never know.

Either way, shitty deal to lose such a huge force in Atlantic development in such a way (or at all, obviously).

Police are currently searching the son, Dennis, residence. Article also includes helpful photo of what a street might look like.

Yeah, I've heard various rumours involving his son over the past few days; whatever happened, it's not gonna be pretty.
