Transforming an A330 into a luxury yacht-like experience

Transforming an A330 into a luxury yacht-like experience

(CNN) – The fact that the rich mega is lengthwise to personalize their private planes to adapt to their lifestyles is not new.

And we are not only talking about your average business plane. For decades, world leaders, royalties, and billionaires have developed the planes that most of us have been in commerce, manufactured by Airbus and Boeing.

But the options on the table become increasingly wild.

Among the leaders of the personalization game, there is Lufthansa Technik in Germany, which recently developed a cabin concept inspired by another essential element for the rich – the Superyacht.

According to the company, the concept of a VIP Cabin explorer with a large body meets two wishes for plane owners: taking their planes almost everywhere while serving as a base camp when they travel – a place to sleep and taking advantage of leisure activities and excursions.

Just like a Superyacht.

The Lufthansa Technik team has chosen the Airbus A330 to present the concept and published a series of rendering demonstrating the possibilities.

These include essentials such as bedrooms, bathrooms, bars, and dining rooms. But the culmination is undoubtedly the retractable veranda – a floor in the front fuselage area which can extend outwards when the plane is parked, seated at the height of about four meters above the apron.

The end of the second narrow is a large-scale integrated projection system for virtual content. It extends from the window belt, reaching the ceiling. Customers can select their lighting and own imaging, using a high-tech protrusion system to create scenes like green forests and the sky filled with stars.

The Explorer concept was launched for the first time in November 2021. The company recently presented a new addition during an aviation agreement in Geneva in May – Le Brabus Adventure Lounge.

The concept places the living room in the rear part of the lower bridge of the A330, which can be seen from the main bridge through a glass floor.

Again, the Superyacht was an inspiration with its garage for offers and toys. A selection of vehicles can be stored in the adventure show for use after landing.

The concept includes a limited edition Brabus 1300 R, created in collaboration with the Austrian manufacturer of motorcycles, KTM.

Wieland Timm, sales manager for VIP and plane Mission Special at Lufthansa Technik, told CNN Travel that the living room presents “a striking example of what this exploration aspect” in-flight could look like.

“Luxury motorcycles are exclusively staged in the accessible lower bridge,” he explains. “Once landed, they can be discharged and give passengers the freedom to explore the current destination in more detail.”

As to why Lufthansa Technik has selected the A330 for the Explorer concept, Timm says that this classic wide plane “offers sufficient space for many new cabin ideas and a good range to meet the special wishes of the target group to explore it. “

However, he notes that an explorer-type interior could also be installed in other wide-hand aircraft such as the Boeing 777.

Who is showing interest?

Yimm says that the target group for the Explorer concept is made up of “rather” classic “ultra-rich individuals traveling and exploring the world in the greatest luxury and – especially – private life, but also the charts of these classes of these classes High-level luxury travel (offering, for example, round trips of 14 days in a price range of $100,000 to $200,000 per week). “

He says they also expect some owners will adopt a hybrid approach.

“For example, a rich person who has an explorer plane but only uses it for a month of the year. This person also chartered it to other operators/users for the rest of the year. “

Until now, the answer has been extremely positive, he says, noting that they have already received requests for information from customers who seek to implement one or more of the technical gadgets of the explorer in their current projects or cabin future.

He notes that it is unlikely that a plane owner will take the whole concept as a whole, but since it is technically possible, the cabin could be produced as indicated. Instead, customers will likely adopt certain design elements according to their needs.

“The simple reason is that the VIP completion activity, particularly for large-body aircraft, is very individual to correspond to the owner’s personal needs … The vast majority of the planes we finish for our customers are unique. “

How close is it to that superyacht experience?

Since superyachts have much more freedom in anchoring and mobility, we asked Timm how common it was for the owners to spend the night on their plane while he was on the ground in an airport.

He says that various airports will allow them to park their plane and “live” almost there for a while.

“Some of our customers already use it,” he adds. “The reasons are diverse and have to do with the fact that these customers often also use the plane as office space and thus receive their customers on-site.

“Others prefer to stay on the plane during the night for safety reasons. In the case of the use of the explorer described, however, the airport acts as the attachment base and the starting point for New adventures/explorations. “
